What do you look for while buying a new car? The majority would say the price, few would argue for resale value, but rarely anyone will pick safety. While customers of all developed countries keep safety first, we lag far behind in keeping safety as a priority while purchasing a new car. Nepal is infamous for a huge number of human casualties in road crashes every year. The need for urban vehicles to meet safety criteria has never been this critical before.

Keeping passenger safety in mind, in August 2018, the Tata Nexon became one of the first models to be tested by Global NCAP under its Safer Cars for India campaign. Now, the Tata Nexon has become the first Made in India car to achieve Global NCAP’s coveted five-star crash test rating.

The Tata Nexon scored five stars for Adult Occupant Protection and three stars for Child Occupant Protection. Following the Nexon’s four-star result earlier this year Tata has improved a number of safety features including making a Seat Belt Reminder (SBR) for driver and passenger a standard for all variants of the model. Even a structural change was made to increase the front passenger’s knee protection level. This, along with meeting the UN95 side-impact protection requirements helped the Nexon bag a full 5-star rating.

In December 2018, Tata Motors announced that the Nexon’s NCAP safety rating (adult protection) has improved from 4-star to a full 5-star. The upgraded score was courtesy of additional safety features, which helped the sub-4-meter SUV fare better in the globally-recognized crash tests. The Tata Nexon is India’s first car to bag a 5-star NCAP rating, and which has boosted its popularity.

Tata Nexon is a crossover, neither a sub-compact SUV nor a hatchback. Its sloping roofline is like the Range Rover Evoque. The Nexon has a flawless exterior design that follows the “Impact” design language of the company. The top of the line XZ+ variant gets a contrast-color roof in steel grey with both red and blue exterior colors. The highlight of the vehicle is an off-white plastic trim running under the greenhouse on the side. One more contrasting element of the car is the black plastic cladding, on the outside, which makes the automobile more high-heeled and matted. The top line of the front grille extends into the headlamps. The same feature is tagged as ‘humanity line’ in the Tata lingo.

The interior is equipped with three layers. The upper portion comprises of dark grey plastic with acute quality while the middle portion is furnished with aluminum giving the Nexon an upmarket look imparting you the feeling of a more premium car and the lowermost portion gets a plastic-greyish shade beige. The comfortable cabin makes it best suited for four while the middle armrest can be folded in the third passenger wants to sit in the car. It is one of the most comfortable cabins under the sub-4m vehicle category. The infotainment system is a 6.5-inch floating touchscreen with a readable and crisp display under the sunlight as well. The system is smooth and responsive with steering mounted controls for easy operation.

The Tata Nexon is available with two engine options – 1.2-liter, three-cylinder, turbo-petrol that produces 110 bhp and 170 Nm, and a 1.5-liter, four-cylinder, turbo-diesel that offers 110 bhp and 260 Nm. Both the engines come mated to a 6-speed manual transmission as standard and a 6-speed AMT as optional. Tata Motors is committed to meet the highest of standards by continuously applying the agenda of passenger safety to all future vehicles.

To increase vehicle safety awareness, Tata Motors has recently initiated a series of promotional campaigns in Nepal. When more than 90% of Vehicles in Nepal are manufactured in India, arguably Tata Nexon is the safest SUV plying on Nepalese Road.
