The Maruti Suzuki Jimny 5-door made its global debut at the 2023 Auto Expo. The Jimny 5-door will go on sale in India initially, followed by Suzuki's other global markets by mid-2023. The Jimny 5-door will be manufactured in India at the brand's Gurugram plant before export to other markets begins. Maruti has begun accepting reservations for the Jimny in India as of today.

The Jimny 5-door isn't an entirely new design; the longer SUV shares many similarities with the shorter 3-door counterpart. Apart from a longer wheelbase, two more doors, and a revised rear section, the India-spec Jimny 5-door resembles the global 3-door model. The trademark Jimny design elements, such as upright pillars, clean surfacing, round headlamps, slatted grille, chinky off-road tyres, and flared wheel arches, are also present on the India-spec variant.

The Jimny 5-door's wheelbase is 340mm longer than the 3-door variant, measuring 3,985mm in length with a wheelbase of 2,590mm. It measures 1,645mm in width and 1,720mm in height. The newly styled rear doors integrate in nicely with Jimny's boxy body form but have a significantly smaller 'useful' rear window area due to the rear door's large-ish quarter glass. Meanwhile, the roof has a contrasting black finish.

The extended area behind the rear door is also brand new, with a large, vertical glass area flanked by sturdy pillars. The Jimny 5-door retains the same side-opening door with exposed hinges, door-mounted spare tyre with black covering, and bumper-mounted tail lamps as the 3-door Jimny. The Jimny 5-door is equipped with 15-inch alloy wheels and 195/80 section tyres.

The Jimny 5-door's interior is also identical to the 3-door model. The dashboard is all-black and robust, with a high-mounted 9.0-inch touchscreen taking center stage. Some components, such as the steering wheel and HVAC control knobs, are shared with other Maruti models, such as the Swift. It also gets a dashboard-mounted grab handle on the passenger side, as well as faux-exposed bolts to add to the tough look.

A rectangular instrument binnacle with a deep set analogue, round dials for speedo and tachometer, and a separate MID is what sets it apart. There are also plenty of smart storage areas, a stack of toggle-like switches on the center console, and a 4x4 gear lever. The Jimny in India is a 5-seater with a bench seat layout in the second row.

In terms of features, the Jimny 5-door gets Maruti's SmartPlay Pro+ infotainment system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and Arkamys sound system. Safety features include 6 airbags, ESP with hill hold assist, hill descent control, rear-view camera and ABS with EBD.

Unlike the rest of Maruti's Indian lineup, which has shifted to the newer K15C engine, the Jimny 5-door retains the older K15B engine, which is coupled to either a 4-speed torque converter automatic or a 5-speed manual gearbox. This engine, which is shared with the Jimny 3-door, delivers 105hp and 134Nm of peak torque. It also receives Maruti's mild-hybrid technology.

The Jimny 5-door sports Suzuki's AllGrip Pro 4WD system with a manual transfer case and low-range transmission with '2WD-high,' '4WD-high,' and '4WD-low' modes. It boasts a sturdy ladder-frame chassis, a 3-link rigid axle suspension, and an electronic traction control system that automatically brakes slipping wheels and redistributes force to other wheels. The Jimny 5-door features a 36-degree approach angle, a 24-degree break-over angle, a 50-degree departure angle, and a 210mm ground clearance.

It is expected to be priced at around INR 12 lakh (ex-showroom) and will rival other rugged 5-door off-roaders such as the 5-door Mahindra Thar and 5-door Force Gurkha.
