Changan has revealed that its rugged off-road EREV SUV, the Deepal G318, is set to debut in China on June 13.
Marking Deepal's inaugural venture into new energy vehicles for hardcore off-road driving, the G318 incorporates range extension EV technology. A range extender EV, or Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV), combines an electric motor with an internal combustion engine or fuel cell generator to extend its driving range beyond what's possible with the battery alone.
Inspired by the famed G318 national highway, which stretches from Shanghai to Zhangmu on the China-Nepal border, crossing the rugged terrains of Sichuan Province and Tibet, the G318 is engineered to conquer challenging landscapes, according to the company. Earlier this year, the Deepal G318 showcased its off-road prowess by successfully scaling a 60% incline, demonstrating its capability to tackle rough terrain.
Measuring 5010/1985/1960 mm (l/w/h) with the inclusion of the roof rack and spare wheel, and boasting a wheelbase of 2880mm, the G318 offers ample space with 818 liters of luggage capacity when the seats are up, expanding to 1747 liters when folded. With an optional tow hook, it can tow up to 1600 kg and discharge a maximum power of 6 kW for external use.
For enhanced off-road performance, the G318 features an electric continuously variable differential lock and an electric differential lock on the rear axle. It offers five off-road dedicated modes, including wading, snow, rough terrain, mud, and sand, alongside everyday driving modes such as magic carpet ride, air suspension, and CDC chassis adjustment. Notably, its approach angle is 27°, while the departure angle is 31°.
However, it's worth noting that, unlike traditional hardcore off-roaders, the G318 lacks a non-load-bearing (body-on-frame) structure. Nonetheless, it compensates with an impressive torsional rigidity of 45,000 Nm/deg.
The Deepal G318 will come in both single-motor and dual-motor configurations, featuring a 1.5T range-extender powertrain. Currently, Chinese media outlets have disclosed that the Deepal G318 boasts a CLTC pure electric range of 190 km and a CLTC comprehensive range of 1,000 km, though it remains uncertain which version these specifications pertain to. The official battery capacity and type have yet to be unveiled.
