British breakdown provider Start Rescue emphasizes the importance of maintaining the 12-volt battery, noting that a faulty or dead 12-volt battery is the leading cause of EV breakdowns.
Many electric car drivers are unaware that their EV has an essential 12-volt battery that supports the car's operations. In addition to the high-voltage battery that powers the motor, the 12-volt system is vital for functions such as door locks, ignition, air conditioning, safety equipment, and controls for the electric drivetrain.
Maintaining the 12-volt battery in an EV is straightforward. Start Rescue advises using your EV regularly to ensure both batteries are in good condition. Regular use helps maintain the 12-volt battery, which is crucial for all the important systems.
Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue, says, "Charging the car regularly helps maintain the 12-volt battery, which charges differently than in an internal combustion engine (ICE) car. Pre-conditioning the cabin temperature while the car is charging is beneficial. Additionally, you can use a trickle charger if the car will be parked for extended periods, such as during a holiday."
Given the 12-volt battery's critical role, Start Rescue advises EV drivers to read the vehicle's manual for maintenance instructions or seek advice from the dealer.
