After weeks of teasers and updates, Mercedes-Benz has finally revealed its flagship EQS sedan. Inside its dedicated EV sub-brand EQ, the German automaker has a slew of new electric vehicles ready to go on the market. The EQS — the electric alternative to the Mercedes S Class — was unveiled under disguise, revealing an ultra-luxury and tech-focused sedan. The Mercedes-Benz EQS 2022 is the brand's first dedicated electric car, as well as the first of Mercedes' EQ brand to enter the United States.
The Mercedes-Benz EQS sedan, due in 2022, will be the flagship of the German automaker's electrified future and is expected to be one of the most luxurious electric vehicles ever built. Although its curvaceous bodywork is engineered to glide through the air with ease for optimum performance, its opulent cabin is outfitted with luxury appointments and cutting-edge technology that deliver the all-important wow factor.
With the EQS 2022, Mercedes-Benz will join the premium electric vehicle market. The EQS, inspired by the F015 model, aims to place Mercedes' mark on the electric-vehicle market by beginning at the top, with what the automaker says is the world's lowest drag coefficient (0.20) and the world's biggest in-car screen (56 inches) and up to 516 horsepower.Mercedes claims that the EQS's 0.20 coefficient of drag (Cd) is the lowest of any production car ever, thanks in part to the One-Bow exterior configuration, but also to meticulous attention to detail throughout the exterior, including a special attempt to smooth the underbody, an improved rear-end design and bumper, and special arrow-shaped front and rear wheel spoilers. The technology that caught our attention, and nowhere is it more noticeable than on the optional glass-covered Hyperscreen dashboard. The vehicle's interior resembles a cabin from a futuristic spaceship rather than an automobile. It has panels that run almost the whole length of the vehicle's dashboard. It's also the first time the MBUX Hyperscreen, a large glass dashboard with three separate information screens – an instrument cluster, a center infotainment center, and a passenger-side auxiliary touchscreen – has been used.
The Hyper screen, which is made up of three screens and is covered in a single sheet of Gorilla Glass, covering the entire dashboard. The instrument panel's monitor is a normal LCD, but the middle and passenger screens are OLED, which provides more light and contrast. The new screen pairs with a new "Zero Layer" MBUX user interface architecture, which layers machine-learning-powered widgets over a 3D map of the area around the vehicle. The widgets, which can monitor anything from the air conditioning to the radio to the phone (and more), learn from the driver's behavior and gradually anticipate desires and surface knowledge based on user trends. If you don't choose the Hyperscreen option, you'll get a single 12.8-inch portrait-orientation monitor positioned tablet-style in front of the steering wheel. The EV sedan is available with a 329-hp rear-drive powertrain (EQS450+) or a 516-hp all-wheel-drive configuration (EQS580 4Matic). Both are operated by a massive 107.8-kWh battery that can have a driving range of more than 300 miles. A lithium-ion battery pack with a functional capacity of 107.8 kWh supplies power to both EQS models. Mercedes hasn't revealed the sedan's EPA-estimated driving range, but based on the less demanding European WLTP test period, it should be decent for about 478 miles. We consider the more restrictive EPA-rated range to be greater than 300 miles. In addition to being able to charge the battery from 10 to 100 percent in around 11 hours and 15 minutes using a 240-volt (Level 2) converter, the EQS will reportedly recharge 70% of the battery in around 35 minutes using a DC quick charger.
The EQS 2022 comes standard with driver-assistance technology. Adaptive cruise control and self-parking assist are among the optional driver-assistance features on the 2022 EQS. The EQS is yet to be priced by the automaker, but industry insiders predict it to comfortably exceed $100,000. The Mercedes-Benz S-Class starts at $94,000 and goes up to $160,000 in 2021. Mercedes-Maybach S models will cost upwards of $200,000.
