Recent visuals of a MG ZS EV that caught fire in Kathmandu's Budhanilkantha, have been circulating across the internet. While there were no passengers in the Electric Vehicle (EV) during the incident, the instance triggered a massive outrage on social media, about what caused the fire.

According to Paramount Motors, a 'short circuit' caused the fire while the ZS EV was being charged in an open space. In a statement, the company said, "Upon receiving notification of the incident, the company promptly dispatched a team, which included technical personnel, to inspect the site on the same day. Based on the information outlined in the
Muchulka
(recognizance/deed) obtained from the local police division in Budhanilkanth, it was observed that the vehicle involved in the incident caught fire due to a short circuit in the electric wire while the vehicle was being charged. "
The cause of the fire remains unclear, with only a short circuit identified as a potential factor. The MG ZS EV, known for its excellent features, also raises questions about potential aftermarket modifications made by the owner at unauthorized workshops. Such alterations, often involving substandard wiring and materials, can lead to short circuits and, as demonstrated in this case, fires. It is crucial for MG Motors to thoroughly investigate this incident and provide clear information to the concerned customer. This is the first time, a mainstream EV has caught fire in Nepal. Given the popularity of EVs in Nepal, the government must establish a dedicated panel tasked with thoroughly investigating the various issues associated with EVs.
