Toyota has introduced a mild-hybrid variant of the Hilux pickup truck in the European market, known as the Hilux MHEV. This model will be manufactured in Thailand specifically for the European market.
The 2.8-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel engine is equipped with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, resulting in a 10% improvement in fuel economy compared to diesel-only powertrains. The power is transmitted to the wheels through a 6-speed automatic transmission.
Toyota has assured that the incorporation of this technology will not adversely affect the Hilux's off-road and towing capabilities. The mild-hybrid system has been strategically positioned, allowing for a water-wading depth of 700mm.
In addition to Europe, Toyota plans to launch the Hilux MHEV in South Africa, Australia, and ASEAN markets soon. Toyota has previously announced that the Fortuner is among the next models from the brand to feature mild-hybrid technology.
