Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), the world’s largest electronics manufacturer also known for making iPhones for Apple, has announced two, new self-developed concept prototype electric vehicles at its third annual Hon Hai Tech Day (HHTD), the Model B crossover hatchback and the Model V all-terrain, electric pickup.

At the same time, Hon Hai showcased the production vehicle Model C, to be launched in Taiwan next year, while showcasing key components of the EV supply chain, such as the electric power steering (EPS) system, solid-state battery, silicon carbide power module, semiconductors, and the EV software platform.

Model C

The Model C will be Taiwan’s first EV to go into production. Scheduled to hit Taiwanese roads in the second half of 2023, the Model C will provide a range of distance range of nearly 700 kilometers. With a drag coefficient of 0.28, the electric car will achieve 0 to 100 km/h under 3.8 seconds.

Model B

The brand-new concept prototype Model B is an electric crossover based on the Model C platform, but with changes to the platform size and a new body design. Its S-duct design, the streamlined roof, and the innovative air curtain on the D-pillar greatly reduces air turbulence allowing the electric crossover to achieve an excellent drag coefficient of 0.26. The compact 4.3-meter Model B has a cruising range of 450 kilometers and uses a 2.8-meter wheelbase to create a comfortable, roomy cockpit.

Model V

The Model V is the first electric pickup truck designed and developed in Taiwan. The double-cab, 5-seat configuration, electric pickup will come with a payload of up to 1 ton and a towing capacity of 3 tons.  Sensors surrounding the body are combined with electronic rearview mirrors and a display screen to integrate the instrument panel, which not only improves safety but offers intelligent technology to users to traverse all terrains.

Despite having unveiled several electric vehicles, Foxconn apparently has no plans to sell cars under its own name. It plans to build cars for other companies in much the same way it builds phones for Apple. For instance, the Taiwanese tech giant builds electric pickups for US-based Lordstown Motors. It also has agreements with another US-based EV company, Fisker Inc. Another California-based startup, Indi EV, has also agreed to have Foxconn build its car, the Indi One.
