The ‘Fastest Production Car in the World’ is one of those titles that fast cars strive for, back in 2007, a relentless little-known manufacturer by the name of SSC managed to grab this title with Ultimate Aero by achieving a top speed of 256.18mph (412.28kmph).

Now, the SSC Tuatara, the company’s latest hypercar, has managed to achieve the title of ‘Fastest Production Car in the World’ yet again. The top speed which it managed to record was a mind-boggling average top speed of 316.11mph (508.729kmph) over two bidirectional runs, and the supercar did it on stock rubber – Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires.

SCC took the Tuatara to the same stretch of highway – State Route 160 – outside of Las Vegas where Koenigsegg set the current record of 277.87 mph (447.87 kph) in November 2017. Professional racecar driver Oliver Webb piloted the Tuatara to a new record, hitting 301.07 mph (484.54 kph) in one direction and an astounding 331.15 mpg (532.93 kph) in the other.

Webb said the car was “still pulling well” at the top end, suggesting the Tuatara can reach even higher speeds. The supercar doesn’t lack the power to do so. A twin-turbocharged 5.9-liter flat-plane crank V8 motivates the model. It produces 1,750 horsepower (1,304 kilowatts) on E85.

However, switching to 91 lowers that to a still astounding 1,350 hp (1006 kW). The supercar is helped by its low dry weight of 2,750 pounds (1,247 kilograms) and slippery 0.279 drag coefficient.
