Honda has unveiled the 5th Generation Honda City and commenced pre-launch bookings in India with a launch scheduled next month. The car is being manufactured at its Greater Noida plant in Uttar-Pradesh. The company’s plant had resumed manufacturing operations from mid-June following all government regulations and the company’s safety protocols for COVID-19 prevention. The launch of the 5th Generation City is scheduled in July 2020. Honda will sell the new City alongside the 4th-gen car. Therefore, it will only be sold in the top-spec VX and ZX trims.
The new City is the longest and widest sedan in the segment with a length of 4,549 mm and a width of 1,748 mm. However, at 2,600 mm, wheelbase is still the same as that of the 4th-gen model. The new City gets a proper 3-box silhouette with a long bonnet and a proportionately designed boot. The car comes loaded with features that are segment-first such as Full LED headlamps, Z- Shaped wrap-around LED Tail lamp.
On the inside, it gets a completely new dashboard layout with black and beige dual-tone treatment that assures a spacious and comfortable cabin. Honda calls this concept of interior design as ‘Ambitious Beauty’. It also offers advanced equipment such as 20.3 cm Advanced Touchscreen Display Audio, Seamless Smartphone Connectivity with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and Weblink, One-Touch Electric Sunroof among others. The new City is India’s first connected car with Alexa remote capability and is equipped with Next Generation Honda Connect with Telematics Control Unit (TCU).
The 5th Generation model is powered by an all-new naturally-aspirated 1.5L i-VTEC DOHC engine with VTC in Petrol that comes paired to a 6-speed manual transmission or a CVT that makes 121 bhp of peak power and 145 Nm of torque. There is a refined turbocharged 1.5L i-DTEC engine in Diesel that is mated only to a 6-speed manual that makes 100 bhp and 200 Nm of peak torque. Both engines are compliant with BS-6 emission norms offering power-packed performance and excellent fuel-efficiency. The newly designed platform with enhanced lightweight, high rigidity, and collision safety structure offers advanced safety, equivalent to ASEAN N-CAP 5-star rating.
Increased use of Ultra High Tensile steel along with the use of Super High Formability 980 MPa grade steel for first time in India as Honda and other advanced high strength steel deliver increased rigidity and weight reduction in the new model. To ensure further safety of the occupants, it comes equipped with 6 airbags, vehicle stability assists, ABS with EBD, 17.7 cm HD full-color TFT meter with G-meter, LaneWatch camera, Vehicle Stability Assist (VSA) with Agile Handling Assist (AHA), hill-start assist, and 3-point seatbelts for all 5 seats with pre-tensioner and load limiter, and many more.
