CATL Leads in China’s Electric Vehicle Battery Competition

Chinese battery manufacturer and technology company CATL is continuously increasing its share in China’s electric vehicle battery market.

According to data released by the China Automotive Battery Innovation Alliance (CABIA), power battery installations in China reached 44.9 GWh in November, marking a 31 percent year-on-year increase and a 14.5 percent rise from October.

CATL secured the top position in power battery installed capacity for November, reaching 19.7 GWh with a market share of 43.91 percent. In contrast, BYD’s power battery installed capacity in November was 10.2 GWh, placing it in second position with a 22.73 percent share.

BYD’s share of China’s power battery market had been around 34 percent in January and February but dropped below 30 percent since March, except for May. CALB secured the third position in power battery installed capacity for November, with 3.24 GWh and a 7.21 percent share. Similarly, Gotion High-tech claimed the fourth spot in November with a 4.7 percent share while Eve Energy, ranked fifth in November.

In November, China’s Li-ion ternary battery installed capacity reached 15.7 GWh, constituting 35 percent of the total market.  LFP battery installed capacity was 29.1 GWh, making up 64.9 percent of the total installed capacity.

In the LFP battery market, CATL’s installed base of 10.63 GWh in November surpassed that of BYD, claiming the top position with a 36.52 percent share. BYD’s installed base of 10.18 GWh in the LFP market secured the second spot with a 34.99 percent share.
